Fathers day----dad's choice. This was as amazing as always. Its pure, dark and full of good.....Syrah stuff. Still youthful, this seems to be moving about as quickly as the glaciers, and that's ok. Other than that, my other 6 notes here on Cellertracker.com sums it up about right. 95 pts

2006 Jones Family The Sisters - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/27/2011)

Having been a fan of these for a while (since the 03 vintage), I can tell you that there is no better feeling than reassurance of ones feelings and opinion, something that I have never been short of. This 2006 remains such an incredible staple in my cellar, as I get down to my last 7, I start feeling a bit melancholy; I know the 2008s are upon us now, and I know it's pretty great in its own right, but does it know that the shoes it need to fit into, lets call it the 'Sisters high water mark' has been set, all I can do is wish it luck. Them's some big shoes.

Today, I walk through a field of violets. The darkness we have all come to expect from these is still in play; the nose is spring violets, black currant and black cherry. The palate shows super breed and structure with tons of deep layers. An incredible array of black fruits with some red tinged fruits lying in the background. Spring flowers dominated by a very intense violet note really makes this love at first sight, but wait, there's more: Black cassis with Kirsch, black-cherries, cola, Kirsch, some soft vanilla notes, some cigar box, and hints of soy sauce. Initially on pop and pour you really need to pay attention as thing enter and exit quicker than Lindsay stays at rehab, but if you do, you are rewarded because now as I write, maybe 15 minutes after starting, the violets have subsided and more black fruits have emerged. The balance is deft and the finish is long. This really remains one of the best deals in the Valley. (95 pts.)

What can I say that has not been said before and probably by me in any of my other half dozen notes here? After I pulled a corked bottle from my cellar 2 months back when at dinner with Abe, I was anxious to open one again. It’s still pure and still firmly focused and awesome. There is not a rough edge to be found and I think this may be in its sweet spot right now. Black and blue fruits run the show with some low notes of warm bacon fat, river stones and blueberry compote. This actually gets a bit plushy in the middle and to the finish which long and elegant. This really still has it all. Fabulous.13 more stored away and happy for it. 96 pts

From my first sip of this back in August, 2006, I can say this has sure evolved from a very being tightly wound and un-giving, to giving its all, and then some. It has been nice watching it over a three and a half year period.

Holy Moly! This is amazing. Pop & pour. Velvety red/black and glass coating like no ones business. The nose is all black cherry, blueberry pie, summer morning fresh river rocks, tar, coffee, plums, and some notes of creme de kirsch! After about a half dozen times tasted, THIS is the single best showing of a perennial pobega favorite. All elegance and structure with nada, zilch nothing flawed whatsoever. Perfect balance and harmony of red and black fruits: blackcherries, blackberries, blueberries, cardamom, red plums, & boysenberries. Violets, warm caramel, a hint of graphite, leather, and river rocks-- Wow. This is truly mind boggling in its precision, delivery and focus. Pure, elegant, classy, and just damn tasty. The tannins are resolved, the acid is balanced, the fruits are alive, the mouthfeel is grandiose, and the finish is ultra long. Have you figured that I like this one a lot? I don't. I LOVE it. 1992 Penfolds Grange

The nose on this is amazing. Cassis, violets, cocoa, Bing cherry, blackberry, and a light note of blueberry. This change d as the night progressed, and actually fell apart in hour 3. It’s elegant and structured with class and grace. I loved to sniffy sniff this all night. Almost as good as last showing, where I said something along the lines of “This is what a first growth like Lafite can only hope to be”, and I stand by that…..

2000 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

What a beauty this has turned into. The color is dark burnt amber and transparent. The nose has a wonderful sasparilla, cassis, kirsch, blackberry, some lead pencil and more. Beautiful fully integrated with no sign of the cliff just yet. The green streak is still in place, but the overall package is so much more complex, I can even look past it. The palate has the black & red fruit medley so elusive by many. Black & red plums, red and black cherries, a faint note of cassis, some graphite, some leather, some cherry cola, and a touch of damp forest floor. A light to mid-weight wine, this is graceful and elegant. A bit short on the take-up, but again, not too shabby for such a shabby vintage. Got to be one of the best 2000s I have had.

Realms 2006 Line-up, REDUX and then some......

I attended the Realm open house last night in NYC at an interesting venue, the Audi Forum on Park Avenue and 47th. Seeing old friends and making new is always the bonus to this open house and last night was no different. Wendell, Juan and Mike are just great unassuming guys who happen to make an excellent wine. The 2006 offerings have caught my attention again, and honestly I was slightly under whelmed with the ’05 cabernets and bought only the Tempest. (I am as fickle as a 12 year old school girl. Good luck changing me now). I know these wines go through many changes and phases as having witnessed at least 6 or 7 times myself in the last 18 months. Having the opportunity to taste some library wines last night just confirmed that once again. The 2004 Phoenix and 2002 To-Kalon were amazing.

2006 Realm Beckstoffer Dr Crane Cabernet Sauvignon
The most black & dark fruited is also the most aromatic and pleasing on the nose, right now. Super concentrated cassis filled with some black cherry and kirsch. A very complete and pleasing wine with a very long and elegant finish. The tannins are evident but the balance is so pure and precise, you get the feeling perfection personified from the neck up. 93/100

2006 Realm Beckstoffer To-Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon
This has amazing structure and style. A bit four square right now, I know that time treats these well (read below). Black fruits of currant, black plums, and some cherry notes this is a bit restrained on the nose, right now. A beautiful one not to be ignored. 91/100

2006 Realm Farella Vineyard Cabernet sauvignon
The nose says red fruits. The palate solidifies those findings. Red cherries and red plums, this is beautifully structured and elegant with a nice mid weight mouthfeel. A few years in the bottle and this will make you smile. 90/100

2004 Realm Phoenix from magnum
This is a wonderful complex wine with much happening. Its currant with some pencil shavings, tar, a slight mushroom note with a beautiful mid weight mouthfeel. Wonderfully textured and precise, this has elegance and class. Anyone lucky enough to have this is surely just that, lucky. Anyone not having it should seek it out. Tasted from two magnums, the first had a bit of cork on the nose that blew off within 5 minutes and exposed just a beautiful wine. 93/100

2002 Realm Realm Beckstoffer To-Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon from magnum
On my way to the exit after all my good nights, I heard my name. Looking around I caught Juan behind the bar with a big bottle in his hands, sure I will catch the later bus.
Such a beautiful and complete expression of To Kalon, this had everything. Pure cassis and dark black berries, the aromatics alone was mind boggling. Medium weight and fully resolved tannins, this is in such a perfect place from when I had it last about a year ago. If the above To Kalon turns to this in 4 or 5 years the owner will be blessed with a near perfect bottle of Cabernet. Wow 95/100

2000 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

2/3/2008 rated 91 points, almost.
Advice is a funny thing, especially when you don't take your own.
On my last outing with the 2000 Mondavi Reserve I recommended that you open it 1 day in advance. So what do I do on Saturday for Saturdays bottle? You guessed it, I open a 2000 Mondavi Reserve and start drinking 3o minutes later.
Not wise. Especially since I was warned by my favorite critic: me.
What was I thinking? It's not like my notes are buried. Anyone hate vegetalnees more than me?

So I Vacu-Vin the 2nd half and put it back in the cellar for Sunday.
Come Sunday...BINGO. It was a totally different wine. Lush, fruit forward and almost seamless.

Will I ever learn?

11/9/2007 rated 89 points: The color as dark old brick, not brown. (after 1.5 hours) The nose revealed slight vegetalness. On the tongue one get the feel of the elegance and breed, but initally slightly akward. Great cassis, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and tar. The fine tannins reside in the background. An admirable mouthfeel and the typical handling of acid a-la Mondavi; Deft. Moderate finish. The vegetalness never really disappeared. I would rate this a solid 90 if the veg was not present. All in all not a bad $30 drink, but I would be perturbed if I spent $125.

2nd day- This evolved nicely. Much more plush and elegant. Great expressive fruits shooting upward through the opening of the glass; black cherry, currant/cassis, black plum, and boysenberry. The green has subsided, but still slightly present in the background. No longer offensive. A bit longer in the finish as well.

This wine is singing tonight. 89+ points.

Plan to open this 24 hours in advace. You will not be dissapointed.
